2021 Science fiction movie with actor Bruce Willis predicates a grim future you don’t want to miss.
The science fiction film Cosmic Sin (2021) leads us in exploration of an aftermath of the first encounter with a hostile alien civilization. Set in a future where humans have colonized other planets, it is directed by Edward Drake and stars Bruce Willis and Frank Grillo. The plot orbits around a squad of soldiers and scientists battling to prevent an intergalactic war, a war that might culminate in the obliteration of humanity.
WARNING: SPOILERS. The narrative unfolds in 2524, four hundred years after humans began expanding across the galaxy. The film commences with an unsettling first encounter with an alien species by a group of workers from Vander Mining located on a remote planet. Workers Juda and Felix initially believe they are alone, however bizarre circumstances soon dawn upon them. Following a violent altercation with an alien entity, Juda manages to alert the Human Alliance; a military force about the troublesome occurrence.
This incident requires investigation.
On Earth, retired general James Ford portrayed by Bruce Willis, is summoned back to service after the alien contact is confirmed. Ford is viewed as an outcast due to his past involvement in the deployment of a weapon of mass destruction on a rebel colony. Nevertheless, this new alien species presents a threat so severe that it compels his superiors to seek his exquisite leadership. On board, the elite team includes soldiers, scientists, and technicians such as General Ryle, Dr. Lea Goss, and faithful soldier Dash.
The science fiction film illuminates the tension and distrust between humans and the extraterrestrials. When survivors of the first contact are brought to McMillan military base for decontamination, it emerges that some have been possessed or infected by the aliens who use the opportunity to attack the soldiers. This revelation sets the tones for the main conflict in the film: the mandate to destroy the alien quantum portal in order to prevent a full-blown attack on Earth.
The team gear up for a do-or-die mission, equipped with a quantum bomb to obliterate the alien portal.
The team battles numerous hurdles including combat with possessed aliens, technical challenges, and moral qualms about their engagement in a war that could result in the obliteration of both races. During the mission, Ford and his company are faced with more than just external threats. They grapple with personal fears, the likelihood of their race’s survival and the uncertainty of their future.
The science fiction film culminates in intensive duels on Elora, a planet thirteen thousand light years away from Earth. Where, they succeed in deploying the bomb through the portal, effectively demolishing it and seemingly ending the alien threat. Though their victory comes at a high price – loss of several team members.
At the end of Cosmic Sin, the survivors return to Earth struggling to comprehend the aftermath. Ford faces solitude and the ramifications of his actions that, while saving humanity, have left an indelible scar on his soul. Despite criticism on its execution, this science fiction movie brings up philosophical questions about the ethics of first encounters, the essence of war, and mankind’s survival in a hostile universe.
